چکیده

Introduction Roundworms of the genus Trichinella are spread worldwide and are responsible for one of the most serious helminthic zoonoses. It is recognized that in many parts of the world none of the existing methods of control for Trichinella infection are applied because of the economic problems, erosions of veterinary infrastructures, failure of educational systems, ineffective abattoir control measures and non-awareness of the disease by medicals. These factors are responsible for Trichinella infection still in the food chain in large parts of the world (1). In Nepal there is a serological evidence of trichinellosis in pigs (2). In pigs high antibody titers against Trichinella reveal a recent infection because several months after the infection the antibody level begins to decreases. Therefore doubtful titers are not predictive enough in older animals. So a verification of the realistic prevalence is required using the Pepsin digestion. Objectives of this current study were; to investigate the Trichinella larval status in meat samples of slaughtered pigs by the Pepsin digestion method; to compare the results of the Pepsin digestion with corresponding serum samples by indirect antibody ELISA and finally to characterize the species of Trichinella larvae.

Cross-sectional study of Trichinella spp in pigs in CDR, Nepal using pepsin digestion and ELISA serology.

This epidemiological cross-sectional study was conducted in five major pig-producing districts of CDR, Nepal from November 2006 to April 2007. A total of 576 slaughtered pigs were randomly selected and diaphragmatic crus muscles (n = 551), corresponding sera (n = 487) and sera only (n = 25) were collected from them. Meat samples were examined by pepsin digestion to evaluate for larvae of Trichi...

First Report of the Occurrence of Trichinella-Specific Antibodies in Domestic Pigs in Central and Eastern Uganda

Previous research on trichinellosis in Africa focused on isolating Trichinella from wildlife while the role of domestic pigs has remained highly under-researched. Pig keeping in Uganda is historically recent, and evidence on zoonotic pig diseases, including infection with Trichinella species, is scarce. A cross-sectional survey on Trichinella seroprevalence in pigs was conducted in three distri...

Seroprevalence of Trichinella in slaughter pigs in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal.

The aim of the present study was to determine the Trichinella seroprevalence in slaughter pigs in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. Serum samples were obtained from 400 pigs at 4 major slaughterhouses and tested for Trichinella antibodies by ELISA using larval excretory-secretory (E/S) antigen. Four were positive and one was equivocal, giving a Trichinella seroprevalence of 1% (95% CI: 0.27 - 2.54). On ...

Patterns and Risks of Trichinella Infection in Humans and Pigs in Northern Laos

Several outbreaks of trichinellosis associated with the consumption of raw pork have occurred in Laos since 2004. This cross-sectional study was conducted in four provinces of northern Laos to investigate the seroepidemiology of trichinellosis in the human population and determine the prevalence and species of Trichinella infection in the domestic pig population. Serum samples and questionnaire...
